Salary History and Expectations

Salary histories and expectations are commonly requested. Occasionally, applicants are automatically screened out if a requested salary history or salary expectation is not sent with the resume.

Tips on including salary histories

Only send a salary history if it is requested.

Use a separate sheet of paper; do not include salary history in your cover letter or on your resume.

Only include the last three to five years of employment.

Tips on including salary expectations

Include your salary expectations when your recent earnings are significantly different than the salary range for the job you are pursuing.

Appropriate for the career changer who is moving from one salary range to another.

In the samples below, note the strength of listing your salary history/expectation in a range such as "mid forties" as opposed to an exact dollar figure.
